GC NAAT

GCTS (swab) GCTU (urine) if both GC and Chlamydia testing required

Please include relevant clinical details as well as at least 3 different patient identifiers e.g. Full name and date of birth, hospital and NHS number. 
 
Sample type: A Urine sample (male patients) or endocervical swab (female patients) is preferred, however, female urine, high vaginal, urethral, rectal or throat swabs will be accepted for GC NAAT testing. 

Please refer to your locally agreed clinical guidelines for further information regarding testing and appropriate treatment.

When collecting urine specimen for testing please use ‘first catch’ sample that has been taken at least an hour after last urination. 
 
When using a female swab for GC testing, please first use a swab to clear away excess mucus to prevent interference in testing. After this has been undertaken, please use a second swab to retrieve cells from the desired destination, ensuring the swab is rotated to ensure full coverage with specimen. 

Once the sample has been taken, it can then be stored at room temperature before being sent to the microbiology department for testing. 
 
Medico-legal requests are to be phoned through to the department prior to arrival and require appropriate paperwork to accompany specimen as per local policy.
