Request form
ICE request ONLY 
 
For patient testing – request on ICE “2019-nCoV (COVID-19) Patient samples”. 
 
Staff testing is by invitation only following notification to the HR Absence Reporting Line and will also require an ICE request form “2019-nCoV (COVID-19) STAFF testing only” 
 
Test information
PCR test to detect presence of SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) RNA in  nose/throat swabs or respiratory samples. 
 
Not currently validated for any other sample type. 
 
Pre-analytical
Please refer to trust testing guidelines and swabbing procedure. 
 
- Hand hygiene must be undertaken, and appropriate PPE donned. 
 
- A throat swab is the minimum requirement for diagnosis 
 
- In the case of COVID-19 swabs ensure viral media tube is pre-labeled with patient details to avoid handling after swabbing.

Special requirements
Rapid Cepheid COVID test (in-house test): 
 
The test must be pre-agreed with the Silver on call as numbers are limited. 
 
Samples should be received in the laboratory with an hour of being taken to ensure results are available promptly and do not impact on clinical care. 
 
Tube type
Rapid Cepheid COVID test: 
 
Swabs: medical wire swabs & Remel swabs 
Respiratory sample: sputum, tracheal aspirate etc 
 
Standard COVID PCR test: 
                
Swabs: medical wire swabs, Remel swabs or COPAN swabs 
Respiratory sample: sputum, tracheal aspirate etc
