Rotavirus - Antigen testing currently unavailable
CategoryMicrobiology - Virology
Request form
Please include all relevant clinical details on the request form. In addition, if the patient has been vaccinated against Rotavirus in the last 4 weeks this should be stated as vaccination can give a positive test result.
Test information
Following the earlier correspondence 05.07.2021 we are pleased say we are able to increase the Microbiology test repertoire once again. This however is not at full pre-Covid capacity. Tests that remain on hold at present due to continued pressures on the lab are:
o   Fungal nail and skin scrapings
o   Rotavirus antigen
We can however perform one-off tests if the clinical scenario demands it; this requires a pre-agreement with the Microbiology clinical team prior to the sample being sent.
Please note there may however be an increased expected turnaround time.
Rotavirus testing is based upon antigen detection and is only performed on patients under the age of 5.
In the era of universal childhood Rotavirus vaccination, the positive predictive value of the test has fallen; all positive Rotavirus tests are confirmed by PCR at the reference laboratory.
If a delay occurs in delivering the sample to the laboratory, please refrigerate.
Formed stools and vomit will NOT be tested for Rotavirus.
Special requirements
Patients with suspected Rotavirus infection should be isolated. Please contact infection control team if an outbreak is suspected.
Rotavirus testing is only performed in the lab on week days.
