It is essential that during sampling, handling and transport all possible sources of extraneous contamination are excluded. For this reason plates should be secured, labeled and packaged appropriately for transport. The samples are returned to the laboratory as soon as possible for incubation. Extremes of temperature should be avoided during transport.
The sample should be transferred to the laboratory and incubated on the same day as collection.
If the plates cannot read immediately they should be stored in the cold room at 4°C and read the following day.
