New roles in the Alexandra Hospital Emergency Department

Marc and Mike

There are changes afoot at the Alexandra Hospital Emergency Department as they look at different ways to improve the patient experience and tackle the increasing demand. The Emergency Department have introduced a new role, Emergency Care Practitioner, to their team to compliment the skills of the other healthcare professionals.

The idea was the brainchild of Marc Tarrant, Emergency Department Matron, who a couple of years ago introduced Emergency Nurse Practitioners to the team.

Marc said: “Opening up the Emergency Nurse Practitioner role to Emergency Care Practitioners gives us a whole new pool of talent to attract. Emergency Care Practitioners bring a different set of knowledge and experiences which is helping us to provide a more rounded service.

“It all goes to improving the experience for the patient and should add to our offer of patients being seen by the most appropriate clinician for their condition. This in turn, should help us run a more efficient and effective patient-centred service”.

Mike Dodson, a former paramedic with the West Midlands Ambulance Service, is the first Emergency Care Practitioner to join the team at the Alex. He saw the vacancy as an opportunity to further his career and put all that he had learnt over the past 12 years both as a paramedic and through university courses into practice.

Mike said: “I chose the Alex as I had undertaken some of my training in the minors department and had always found the team very supportive, friendly and knowledgeable. The Emergency Care Practitioner role within the trust has already opened me up to new experiences and I am enjoying every day of it”.
